THE VOORHIS VOICE A Liberal Voice of the Inland Empire February 2009 claremontdemocrats@yahoo.com (909) 632-1516 www.claremontdems.org Editor: Laura Ditte Lo MEETINGS AND SPECIAL EVENTS Our usual luncheon meeting place, Captain K J Restaurant, has closed without prior notification. Therefore, DCC plans to have its luncheon meetings for February 13 and March 13, at noon, in the private banquet room of the, A Rated, El Ranchero Mexican Restaurant, 984 W. Foothill Blvd, Claremont. El Ranchero is on the south side of Foothill, about a block west of the previous location. The banquet room is considerably larger than the previous location and a buffet will be set up for our exclusive use. The buffet will contain a choice of meat and non-meat entrees (no pork) rice, beans, green salad, chips and salsa. Beverages [coffee, tea, or soft drink (Coke, Diet Coke & 7-UP only)] are included and your $10 price also includes tax and gratuities. Restaurant staff will be available to help those who need assistance with the buffet. Since this is a buffet (and these are hard times) please help the Club keep down your future costs by taking only what you will eat or drink on site. Have fun, meet new people and enjoy the program! Please do bring your voting friends. "Other Party" voters are welcome to our Club luncheon meetings. The next general meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 23 at 7:30, in Porter Hall (Pilgrim Place). The speaker will be Chris Veirs, Senior Redevelopment Planner, City of Claremont on sustainability in Claremont. The agenda will include the following: Election of Officers Approval of by-laws amendments (qualification of office) Gaza Resolution Issues Committee Plans Volunteers for city council election campaign ARTICLE VII ELECTION OF OFFICERS A. IN FOND REMEMBRANCE OF STEVE ZETTERBERG Steve Zetterberg, a lifelong Democrat activist and attorney, died on January 30 from heart failure. Mr. Zetterberg was born on October 2, 1916 in Galesburg, Illinois and spent his childhood in Newcastle, Indiana, moving to Claremont in high school. He graduated from Pomona College and Yale Law School and served in the Coast Guard during the war. Following his discharge, he worked in the office of Democratic Senator Scott W. Lucas. Mr. Zetterberg returned to Claremont to practice law in 1947 and was subsequently elected chairman or a citizen's committee to manage the area's growth. He became actively involved in Democratic politics and encouraged Jerry Voorhis to recapture his five term Congressional seat which was lost to Nixon in 1946. Mr. Voorhis was unable to run for health reason and Mr. Zetterberg somewhat reluctantly threw his hat into the ring. The Claremont attorney ran against Richard Nixon, a first term congressman from Whittier. At that time, a practice known as "cross-filing" was in use allowing candidates to run without party identification. Unlike the incumbent Nixon, Mr. Zetterberg refused to cross file due to ethical reasons and lost to Nixon who was listed on both Democratic and Republican ballots as the incumbent. Mr. Zetterberg made a second bid for Congress in 1950 but, although unsuccessful, he continued to play an active role in Democratic politics. According to Lee McDonald, professor emeritus of government at Pomona College, Mr. Zetterberg was, "One of the most loyal democrats who for 50 years attended Los Angeles County Democratic Committee meetings." Professor McDonald added, "Those were heady times when we challenged the traditionalists with a grass roots approach." He moved on to found and inspire the Democratic Club movement which registered voters increasing Democratic numbers which had been diminished by cross-filing. Cross-filing ended in 1959 and Pat Brown defeated Nixon for governor in 1962. Later in life, Mr. Zetterberg served on the Boards of Pomona Valley YMCA and Casa Colina. He was a committed supporter of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice. He audited classes at Pomona College for 30 years in music astronomy, geology, and quantum physics and practiced law until January 2008. Connie, Mr. Zetterberg's wife of 67 years, died in 2007. He is survived by his son Charles of Claremont, sons Alan of Princeton, New Jersey, and Arvid Pierre of San Francisco; a daughter , Del, of Plains, Montana and nine grandchildren. Mr. Zetterberg will be greatly missed by his many friends, colleagues, and members of the Claremont community. A memorial service is planned in a month.
