THE VOORHIS VOICE A Liberal Voice of the Inland Empire June 2009 claremontdemocrats@yahoo.com www.claremontdems.org Editor Laura Ditte Lo MEETINGS AND SPECIAL EVENTS Laura Ditte Lo Susan Schenk spoke at the June luncheon of the Democratic Club of Claremont. Her topic was "Claremont and the Bernard Field Station". Dr. Schenk has a PhD in Botany and is a member of the Joint Sciences Department at the Claremont Colleges. Dr. Schenk traced the founding of the Field Station by the acquisition in 1924 by Ellen Browning Scripps. The 85 acres represent a unique living laboratory for many classes and ongoing research by students and faculty. The Station is the site for native endangered species in addition to a great biodiversity including flora, fauna, and insect life. Approximately two-thirds of the Station is coastal sage scrub listed by the Nature Conservancy as the worldUs most endangered. Although not open to the general public, educational groups may request guided tours. It is our task to remain vigilant to protect this pristine, natural landscape and make sure that it is not sacrificed to construction or diminished by intrusive recreational activities. For further information regarding the Bernard Field Station go to www.bfs.claremont.edu. Carolee Monroe Our Democratic Club will again participate in Claremont's July 4 festivities. The theme this year is "Rockin' Hoppin' 4th", such an appropriate theme for us Democrats now that Barack (Ba-ROCK) Obama is our president! We invite you to join us as we celebrate the event. We need volunteers to staff our booth in Memorial Park and we need volunteers to ride and walk in the parade. Please consider sharing some of your time with us as we commemorate our country's Independence Day. Booth volunteers are needed, mainly around mid-day. We will have club membership forms to distribute, along with "register to vote" forms. Some swag, especially Obama t-shirts, will be available. The popular life-size cutouts of President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton will be on display so that visitors can take a picture of themselves together with either or both of them. We will have available everything necessary for visitors to make and take their own "pet Ba-Rock", along with instructions on caring for this new pet. There will be many activities happening in our booth, so if you will have some free time, please consider volunteering in our booth for an hour or two. During the parade, which begins at 4 PM, we need volunteers to carry our Club banner, to ride on our vehicle, and to walk the parade route. Continuing with the "rockin" theme, our parade entry is "Dem Rocks: Democratic Stepping Stones to Change, Hope and Unity". Rather than be an observer of the parade this year, please consider being a participant in our entry. I am hosting a wine tasting and open house on Wednesday, June 17 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The cost per person is $25, which includes a wine tasting, light refreshments and an enjoyable evening with like-minded friends. The event is being held at Wine Styles, located at 201 N. Indian Hill Blvd., in Claremont. During the event, I would also like to invite you to pop next door to visit the official Russ Warner for Congress campaign office. We opened last month, and my son Greg and I have been busy reaching out and raising money for my 2010 congressional bid against David Dreier. Already, the campaign has raised more than $25,000 and I am so pleased to have pledges for much more. Space is limited for the June 17 wine tasting reception and open house, so please RSVP your attendance to info@warnerforcongress.com. If you are not able to attend, I hope you will consider helping me send a strong message to David Dreier that we have only just begun to fight. THE 59TH CELEBRATES DEMOCRATS OF THE YEAR The 59th Assembly District selected Carol Whitson and Joe Lyons as the Democrats of the Year for 2009. Carol worked diligently in the effort to elect President Obama: Registering voters, distributing materials, working in the headquarters, and manning the table at the Sunday market. Currently, Carol is the Recording Secretary for the DCC Executive Committee. Joe Lyons serves as Executive Committee Vice Chair of the Bonita Democratic Council and the Pomona Valley Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Inland Valley Recovery Services. We honor the dedicated commitment of these fellow democrats. ALVIN WHITE Our club member and friend Alvin White passed away recently. He and his wife Myra have been solid Democrats and often participated in our Friday luncheons. We will miss him, and we offer our sincerest sympathies to Myra. SAM MALOOF WORLD RENOWNED ARTIST AND DCC MEMBER The world recently lost its most famous artistic woodworker, Sam Maloof, who was for many years a member of our club and provided his home and museum as a venue to raise funds for us and for other good causes. We are grateful for his support. His beautiful furniture graces the homes of the rich and famous, as well as the Smithsonian and other museums. The world was enriched by his artistic and social contributions. He will be missed by many DISCLAIMER The Democratic Club of Claremont does not endorse any/all of the articles, stories, links, editorials, or products found in these e-mails or on this blog.
