DARCEL WOODS - CANDIDATE FOR 59TH ASSEMBLY SEAT New Energy - New Directions - New Voice Hello Neighbor, I began this campaign journey in June. I have been to and introduced myself at 11 of the 15 city/town council meetings within the 59th AD. I will be continuing to make those appearances but I am now beginning my connection with the democratic clubs and county central committees. For those of you getting to know me, let me tell you a little about myself. I moved to the Pomona Valley in 1963 with my Teamster father and educator mother. My work history includes 10 years as a peace officer at both the county and state levels. Eighteen years as a college professor at Mt. SAC and Chaffey College. Nine years as an education administrator for a local Regional Occupational Program (ROP) heading up their Special Projects Department. I have served as a San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors appointee to the county's Workforce Investment Board's Youth Council for 9 years and recently completed a term as a governor appointed Commissioner on the State Board of Parole Hearings. I hold a B.A. in Education from Cal State University Fullerton and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of La Verne. Let me say I recognize the core and common thread issues of education, jobs, mortgages, prison reform, labor unions under attack, health care reform and the integrity of our representatives that is driving the discord in California, as well as across our entire nation. I have been a labor union member my entire professional career. I believe in their value for working families and support them in their efforts to maintain their hard fought ground with employers. We need legislators who support that school of thought. We need representatives with solid moral compasses. Representatives who understand, and more importantly, care about the individual who lost their job after many years of hard work and dedication, and is a month away from losing their car and/or home because of their lack of employment; not their lack of desire to work. Representatives who have an idea of what that incoming freshman at the college or university is experiencing when their enrollment is accepted but find that so many class sections have been cut and faculty placed on furlough that they can not get the classes they need in order to maintain the financial aid awarded to them. I am in the midst of those scenarios every day of the week at the college where I teach and within my community. I don't have to tell you about the countless number of homes in foreclosure and what that means to our communities. Or the fact that those with health insurance are still struggling to pay their share of cost each year and those no longer with health insurance, due to loss of employment, grappling with how to get the medical attention for themselves or their loved ones. These are some of the issues we are facing right now. Californians should not have to continue to face them without the assistance of their legislators. I know this and so do you. Having worked within the Criminal Justice System as a Deputy Sheriff, Probation Counselor, Correctional Youth Counselor, Field Parole Agent in Los Angeles County and culminating that career recently as a Commissioner on the Board of Parole Hearings presiding over Life with the Possibility of Parole decisions, gives me insight into the problems and ensuing issues inherent in that system. Not only have I taught the subject at the collegial level but I've worked in it, alongside some of the most dedicated and professionally competent individuals at all three levels of the system who deserve our respect and support. Yes the system is flawed and yes it needs serious rehabilitation, but this too can be accomplished. The above mentioned issues are but a few of the things I want to take a leadership role in helping to resolve once I am elected in 2010. I have a proven record of working with Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike on issues that matter in our communities: home valuations, poverty and neighborhood crime, water conservation, teen pregnancy prevention, school drop out reduction, gang and drug trafficking suppression, economic development in urban settings, victim advocacy, job training for displaced workers, senior quality of life, and prison reform. None of these issues of concern are insurmountable but it will take some thinking out of the box, collaboration on the part of all stakeholders, and a receptive California constituency. To win this Assembly seat I'll need my district's democratic clubs to continue to register democrats and get them to the polls, volunteers to walk the precincts and phone bank, and a grassroots effort that includes constant fundraising. I want and need the support of educators, labor, business, law enforcement, judicial branch employees, correctional peace officers, community based organizations, students, religious leadership and our fire fighters to stand with me as I work to bring a New Energy, A New Direction, and a New Voice for California. Will you stand with me? Together We Can Rebuild California. Darcel Woods Candidate for the 59th Assembly District 2010 FPPC# 1321073 SUSTAINABLE CLAREMONT Ned Freed, our webubermeister and executive board member, has agreed to be our representative to the Democratic Club of Claremont.
